STRATEGY SPECIALTY PHARMA

SPECIALTY PHARMA

_The central element of Specialty Pharma is the fully integrated specialty pharma group Vifor Pharma. Vifor Pharma researches, develops, produces and markets pharmaceutical products and solutions that significantly improve the quality of life of patients throughout the world.

_Pharmaceutical products. The driving force behind Specialty Pharma is the high incidence globally of iron deficiency anaemia, which can accompany a number of diseases. Anaemia was originally diagnosed only in connection with kidney diseases, but today it is also diagnosed increasingly in gynaecology (female reproductive health), gastroenterology (diseases of the gastrointestinal tract), haematology (blood diseases), oncology (cancer) and in other indication areas such as cardiology (treatment of heart conditions and diseases). The therapy for iron deficiency anaemia is very effective, and this opens up impressive development potential.
_The aim is to make considerable resources available for research and development in order to create a growth area that will be supported by top-quality research, globally recognised products, and a comprehensive network of high-ranking opinion leaders. Aspreva Pharmaceuticals Corporation, which was acquired in early 2008, complements the traditional core businesses of the Pharma business sector and has made it possible for Pharma to be restructured as a fully integrated specialty pharma group.

_Vifor Pharma. The aim of the new Vifor Pharma is to leverage its strengths in order to be a leader in the selected therapy areas of anaemia and nephrology and to assume a leading role in defined key markets based on the third pillar, Consumer Health (OTC). In order to achieve this goal, Vifor Pharma will dedicate a significant portion of its revenues to research, development and acquisition of new pharmaceutical products. On the operational level, Vifor Pharma intends to operate very strategically on the basis of small, flexible and adaptable organisational structures.

_Development of the OTC market. The chronic strain on the public health care budget will eventually lead to a situation in which an increasing number of prescription medicines that have been proven safe over many years will be reregistered as OTC products. Galenica will therefore also continue to develop the OTC area, capitalising on its own indisputable advantages.

_Alliance Boots. The strategic partnership with Alliance Boots is based on a contract that will remain in force until 2014. This partnership makes it possible to utilise synergies in various European countries, particularly in the UK.

_Expansion and export development. Through its subsidiary Potters, Galenica has already become established as one of the 15 largest OTC companies in the UK and intends to further expand its organisation in this market. Galenica also intends to continue this expansionary policy in Europe through internal growth and through alliances and the purchase of products or companies, whenever the opportunity arises.
