Federal Council decision on the limited dispensing of selected medicines
Thursday, 19 March 2020
Galenica welcomes the decision of the Federal Council from 18 March 2020 to limit the dispensing of selected medicines. This will relieve the burden on the supply chain and ensure that basic supplies can continue to be provided in a timely manner, so that priority can be given to supplying medicines to those in need (e.g. patients with chronic illnesses).
The demand for medicines has been extremely high for a number of weeks. Especially since the measures introduced by the Federal Council on Friday 13 March, panic buying has placed additional pressure on the provision system. The capacities of all logistics centres are being stretched beyond their limits. Therefore, at the present time, it is no longer possible to ensure that the pharmacies, drugstores and medical practices are replenished in a timely manner.
The pharmaceutical wholesalers and service providers in the Swiss healthcare system are doing everything they can, using all the powers available to them to maintain the supply. However, there is an increase in delayed deliveries of medicines that are available at the supplier.
The pharmacies of the Galenica Group (Amavita, Sun Store and Coop Vitality), as well as the mail order pharmacy Mediservice are consistently implementing the requirements of the Federal Council and are asking their customers for their understanding and solidarity.
The companies and employees of the Galenica Group are doing everything they can to contribute towards managing this extraordinary situation.
